Bed and Bath

Whether you’re hosting guests or creating a comfy retreat for yourself, here are my top tips and tricks for styling the coziest of beds.

As I’ve mentioned here on Design Happy, I recently purchased a new home. After living in a one-bedroom apartment for a year, I now have two extra bedrooms for friends and family who come to visit. One of these rooms has a queen bed, and the other has two twin beds.

Although the decorating in these two new guest bedrooms has a long way to go, I wanted to at least have the beds ready for the folks who would soon be visiting my new home.

After the mattresses were in place, I headed off to HomeGoods. I knew I could count on them to have everything I needed to completely style the three beds, and of course, they did! If you’re also decking out a bedroom, here are some tips for making a beautiful and cozy bed.

Skip the Bed-in-a-Bag

When designing, I typically avoid matching sets of anything. For example, if I’m purchasing a dining table, I won’t get the chairs to match, or if I’m buying a new bed, I’ll opt for a vintage dresser. The same thinking applies to the purchase of bedding. Instead of getting a set of everything in the same pattern, mix and match items to create a collected, one-of-a-kind look.

For guest rooms, I prefer to use a duvet cover plus a duvet, quilt, or coverlet. These tend to be a bit easier to clean than a large comforter. I also find a duvet and cover to be especially luxurious.

Place Sheets Right Sides Together

After your fitted sheet is in place on the bed, you’ll want to put on the top sheet. I like to place it face down so that the right sides of the two sheets are together. After adding your duvet or coverlet, you can fold everything over at the top which creates an inviting look. This is especially important if your sheets have a pattern or design.

When shopping for sheets, I recommend getting something with a 300 to 500 thread count. Recently, I’ve also been loving satin sheets. They usually do not have a thread count and tend to be more expensive.

Pillows

Whether it’s down- or poly-filled, everyone likes a different style of pillow. In my guest rooms, I like to use down pillows for the main bed pillows and poly-filled for the pillow inside the shame. Doing this increases the likelihood my guests will find a pillow that’s comfortable for them.

I also recommend putting a pillow protector and a pillowcase on every pillow.

Iron the Pillowcases

My quick tip for making a bed look fresh, clean, and cozy is to iron the pillowcases. This is what I did when I ran a Bed and Breakfast. It’s luxurious for guests to rest their heads on freshly pressed pillowcases, plus it creates the illusion that you took the time to iron all of the bed linens.

Add Decorative Accessories

With the bed made, you’ll want to add a few accessories to show your personality. I recommend a couple of fun or decorative pillows to make the bed look inviting. A throw at the foot of the bed is another nice touch. It adds color and style, and extra warmth, in case it gets a bit chilly.

I likewise recommend providing a blanket during the winter months and a small fan during the summer. These items will ensure your guests stay comfortable all night long.

And that’s it. With these simple tips, you can create a cozy escape for you or your guests. And as you can see, it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort to make an inviting and restful retreat.
