A master bedroom should be a relaxing and serene space. It’s the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you see each night, so of course, you want it to feel like a relaxing oasis. But this space is also the one room in your home that is just for you. This is why we think it’s extremely important that you fill this sacred real estate with items you love and items that help tell your story.

When I moved into my house, I knew the master bedroom needed a little extra TLC. I set out to create a light, airy, and relaxing space filled with personal touches that are important to my husband and me. Some fresh paint, a few pieces of furniture, and lots of thoughtful accessorizing, I can finally say… we did it!

I love our master bedroom so much because it’s “so us”. The light and airy design is our style, it feels very relaxing, but what we love the absolute most about this transformation is the small touches that make it feel like home, our home. Here are my best tips and tricks for injecting personal touches into your master bedroom, and just about any room in your home, without breaking the bank!

Display Meaningful Art

First and foremost, it’s important to choose art with intention. Sure there are plenty of gorgeous pieces you could bring into your home, but we encourage you to hold out until you find the one that is so you. Maybe it’s an abstract piece of art that speaks to you or more a black and white photograph that captures a significant memory in your life. Either way, be mindful when looking through the diverse selection of art at HomeGoods and choose something that is both beautiful and reflects your story.

Or you can do like we did and opt out of the professional art and frame your own! We picked up these black frames for $14 each at HomeGoods and used photographs my husband and I took on our travels to remind us of these adventures together. This was such an affordable way to tell our story, yet still keep the room feeling stylish.

Above the nightstand, we couldn’t help but frame a photograph that we love of our son. This wood frame was another affordable option at HomeGoods that not only makes us smile but also adds a hint of warmth to our white nightstands.

Regardless of what art or frames you buy, make sure they reflect your style, your story, and most importantly, make you smile!

Choose Books You Love

A lot of people unwind from a busy day by relaxing with a good book before bedtime. But nightstands can hold more than just your current novel. We love to use the flat surfaces throughout the bedroom, like a nightstand or dresser, to display some of our favorite coffee table books.

HomeGoods has an amazing selection of high-end coffee table books at affordable prices. We typically try to search for titles that say a little bit about us and what we love. We also try to look for hardcover spines that align with the color scheme of our space. This allows the books to double as gorgeous accessories too!

In our family, we have a tradition to take Polaroid pictures with guests who come over to visit. We started when our son was born and have loved collecting these memories ever since! I bought this bowl from HomeGoods and love having a place to not only store these keepsakes but also display them!

But just because displaying Polaroids may not be your thing, that doesn’t mean you can’t make one of your family traditions double as an element of your bedroom decor. Some people save postcards or even photo booth strips, both of which make adorable decor! Check out this list of non-traditional items that can double as art and decor and you may be surprised at what items you already own that can instantly add personality to your room.

Inject Life

It’s important to add some type of life into every room of your house and the bedroom is no exception. We opted for fresh flowers on one nightstand, in a gorgeous geometric vase. But if you don’t have a budget for fresh flowers or don’t have a green thumb, don’t be afraid to use faux greenery instead. HomeGoods has such a large and diverse selection of vases, faux greenery, and even faux flowers so you should have plenty of options to choose from! We love mixing and matching real and faux, your guests will never know the difference.

Choose Textiles You Love

Last, but certainly not least, we want your room to be a place that helps you feel rejuvenated after a long night’s sleep. HomeGoods is our go-to place for luxury bedding with an affordable price tag. We picked up this
duvet cover, pillowcases, and decorative pillow there and the only bad part about this purchase is that it’s so comfy that trying to get up each morning is tough!

I love this lumbar pillow from HomeGoods, especially the textured detail. When choosing your textiles and pillows, be sure to look for patterns that you love and will be excited to cuddle up to each night. Mixing and matching colors and patterns is another great way to highlight your style.

Enjoy the Journey!

Oh, and one more thing! When it comes to building the master bedroom of your dreams, be patient and enjoy the process. Home doesn’t happen overnight, so give yourself grace and enjoy the process. And before you know it, you’ll look around and be surrounded by items you love and items that reflect your style and your story.
