Adding Personality to a Modern Living Room

Furniture and Home Accents Organization and Cleaning

When we design a room we usually start with the basics…the paint color, the lighting, a rug, and the furniture layout. But it’s what happens after all of those big decisions that we truly love – the decorating! A room really comes to life with all of the accessories and personal touches that you add at the end.

Some friends of ours recently moved into a new home and had all of the basics in their living room, but they needed some help with those final touches. That’s where we came in! After a trip to HomeGoods, we were armed with the accessories we needed to really take their living room to the next level.

Tips to Create the Ultimate Shelfie

The biggest area to tackle was this empty bookshelf, it was just begging for some life! The homeowners were a little overwhelmed with all of the space on the shelves and didn’t know where to begin. We always suggest you follow this formula for the perfect shelfie…

Start with Books: Of course a bookshelf needs some books. But we don’t like to just throw books on a shelf all willy-nilly. Instead, we put the books to work. Sometimes they’ll be used on a surface to ground a space. Or to add height. Or often times we will use a long row of books and then sandwich them with pretty bookends.

2. Create Depth: When it comes to styling vignettes, it’s all about layers. We like to layer in simple frames and often put those in the back of the shelf for some much-needed depth.

3. Add Large Objects: Large objects are next when designing the ultimate shelfie. We found a few large vases at HomeGoods to add to this space. If you’re on the hunt for something specific for your own shelves, be sure to measure the height of your shelves so you don’t get something too big.

4. Make It Personal: You can have a gorgeously styled shelf, but without a little personality it will always fall flat. Personal photos, souvenirs from travels, and family heirlooms are great additions to any shelfie.

5. Always Add Greenery: The plants on this bookcase are all faux, but shhhhhh, no one needs to know that! Some greenery adds some much-needed color to the shelves and adds interest. You can always go for a real plant, but HomeGoods sells some faux ones that are pretty convincing.

With the shelf area looking good, we just had a few more things to add to this gorgeous living room space.

No comfy area is complete without large blankets to use on movie nights, but sometimes too many throws can clutter a family room. We like to store our family room blankets in a wicker basket. The basket adds some texture to the room, and the lid hides all of the clutter inside. When it’s time to curl up and hang out, you have all of your cozy blankets right on hand.

We also added a wood tray to the round coffee table. We went with wood again to add some more texture and to balance the wooden bookcase in the corner. Because the coffee table is round, we decided to purchase a rectangular tray from HomeGoods.

A tray on a coffee table is a good idea for a couple reasons. First, it keeps all of the items on your table together and organized. Items like your remote control, your favorite coffee table books, and even coasters work great displayed on your coffee table. I also added some “secret storage” to the coffee table tray with the black box. This black box holds playing cards, so they’re right at hand when you want to start a game in the living room. Boxes are always a good idea and HomeGoods has plenty!

Second, using a tray makes it really easy to move all of those items quickly. If you want to put your feet up on the table, you can swift pick up the tray and have the entire surface cleared in no time at all.

Because this table is two levels, there’s even more room for storage. But instead of throwing magazines and books underneath the table, find a sleek basket from HomeGoods to corral everything.

Finally, no family room is complete without some pillows. We love the pillows at HomeGoods because they’re budget friendly and you can find such a good variety. Be sure to include various sizes throughout your couch, and vary up the colors and patterns to keep it looking interesting.

Now this family room is feeling a lot less cold, and a lot more inviting! And that’s exactly how a room like this should feel. It should showcase your favorite items, while being a spot for your favorite people to come together and relax.
