Within our homes, it’s the walls that give us the biggest opportunity to express our (and our home’s) style. However, decorating walls is not always the easiest task. Given that many walls are large, it can be challenging to determine what to do with them.

Now that the holidays are behind us, many of us are looking for ways to bring more life, color and style to our homes. That’s why today, I thought I’d share five of my favorite ideas for adding unique style to walls. From the beloved gallery wall to quirky art, try one or all five of these ideas to dress up the walls in your home.

1. Create a personalized gallery wall
Nowadays a gallery wall can have a variety of looks. From organized and simple to eclectic and fun, the options are almost endless. Plus, thanks to a store like HomeGoods, you can put together a unique and personal gallery wall quite inexpensively.

If you’re new to gallery wall creation, start simple. Take my living room as an example. Here, I used nine of the same frames and filled them with photos from my travels. After some measuring and planning the layout, I covered a huge wall in my living room for under $150.

And if you’re thinking, “I’m not a good photographer,” think again. Many of those photos were taken with my phone. You can do it!

2. Get creative with quirky artwork
One of my go-to places when shopping at HomeGoods is the wall art section. Recently, I was super excited to find this collection of black and white photographs printed on canvas. Already framed, they were ready to hang on the wall.

What I loved about them is that not only are they beautiful, but they add whimsy to my space. As you know from another post I created here on Design Happy, quirky is an essential aspect of my home decor philosophy.

Shopping places like HomeGoods allows you to change your artwork seasonally (if desired) to keep your home feeling new and fresh.

3. Add texture with a wall hanging
You’ve created a gallery wall and hung some other artwork. Now you need texture. You may have noticed that wall hangings, particularly ones in a macramé-style, have gained popularity in recent years. With its heyday in the 1970s (though most popular in the Victorian era), macramé wall art is easily accessible. And, if you’re feeling extra crafty, you can knot your own.

Whether you need to cover a large space or just add a touch of softness and texture to a smaller area, this would be a great option.

4. Make your art functional
If you’re tight on space or need your walls to do double duty, you can make your art function for you. In spaces like the kitchen or office, think about how you can put your walls to work.

For example, I use an oversized bulletin board in my office as a place for tucking inspiring photos. Also, a collection of clipboards near my desk helps keep my paperwork organized.

In my kitchen, I got crafty with a DIY pegboard which holds useful utensils, salt and pepper, measuring cups, and more. It also adds custom style to my space. You can learn how I made it here.

5. Think outside of the box
Sometimes you can create art for your wall without using art at all. In my kitchen and dining room, I hung plates on the wall. With an eclectic collection in my dining room, I change a couple of them seasonally to create different looks for the space.

Put your creative cap on when shopping and look in sections outside of the wall decor aisle for unique things to hang on the wall. Things like baskets and trays are a couple possibilities. Also, try checking out your favorite thrift store, flea market or antique shop for other creative and one-of-a-kind finds.
