Everything is LOVELEY! Except for tjhe suit of the bullfighter shown in the 1st picture… bullfights are a horror that must been erased from any tradition. I am saying it as a mexican, bullfights are not romantic, inocent animals (horses and bulls) are tortured in each bullfight. Pls don’t use bullfighter customs as a decoration: they are a shame for anyone who loves life and kindness.

Hi Julie,

Sure, you could use the same concept for any table. I might add in a few more pieces in the center to create lots of interest and the place settings would be a lovely low level as you stated.
You could place a few tall candlesticks on the table, add in a variety of stacked books and place vases of pretty flowers on top of the books. These are things most of us have, so, creative and not much spent.

Thanks again so much. Another designer did the top room and I’m not sure of the sources for her furnishings. Sorry no help again, but search the internet and see what you find. It’s a pretty turned leg table in a dark mahogany finish.

You’ll love the Graphite paint color for you room. They are beautiful shades and not cold at all. Enjoy your room. As for the fan in the bedroom, we purchased it from a local store in Orange County, Ca. , Accent Lighting.
But it was a brand that could be found online I believe. Sorry, I don’t even know the brand, but if you Google contemporary 3 blade fans you might be able to find it or something close to it.

I have painted my kitchen a color called green pond by ace paints. ( it is a warm green) I want to paint a wall in my living room a chocolate brown color and I am not sure if this is a good idea but I love both of these colors, what color should I paint the other 3 walls in the living room? should I change my color scheme? I really dont like blue and all the coordinating colors that I am seeing show blue going with the chocolate brown. any suggestions?

So glad you like my little powder room. Not much to it, but that makes it easy to decorate and cheap. Sometimes simplicity makes the biggest impact.

KellyBo, you asked about spacing between the boards. Most of them are about 15″ on center, but a few I had to fudge a little to fit them in right (wider on the boards behind the toilet). But your eye usually doesn’t see slight differences, so sometimes you have to fit them it the best way they’ll go. It still looks great.

About 10 years ago I happened upon a tangerine glass vase that positively leaped into my shopping basket. It was a rounded ginger jar shape and I loved it but it did not fit well with the colors I was using in the home at that time. But I hung onto the piece because I loved it. I finally gave it up and my daughter pounced on it and the vase now. lives happily and beautifully in her home office near a window and glows when the sun shines through it. The color actually sings, I am glad it is getting the attention it deserves. Using this vibrant color in small doses is candy to the eye and spirit.

Saw a great chair in local Home Goods today- leather barrel chair, comfortable, looked terrific. Good price at $299. But didn’t buy it because there was a minimum $99 delivery charge. Home Goods should look at customer stats- senior citizens have more discretionary income than many- not that they’re wealthy, but they are usually not paying tuition, nor mortgages- they are finished with that. But they aren’t usually able to heft their own furniture purchases, even if they did have a truck. I’m not planning to shop Home Good store anymore, since it’s disappointing to find something you like, but which the delivery charge makes as pricey as other stores that do have free delivery.

I have recently shopped at two Home Goods stores. The collections are excellent and well-priced. However, there is no need to mix in items made in China and the Phillipines. There are enough beautiful products from the African continent that could be included in the collection.
Please don’t let this be the last time we see such a wonderful collection. In the “old days” of Marshall’s, one could always find a few selected, and authentic pieces of African art and other goods on the shelves. That would be a lasting commitment to our culture.

I love traveling and seeing items made in other countries. After being unemployed for a year, I believe in more and more about buying American products. We have too many people who are unemployed for a long time because so many jobs have been sent to other countries. There are Americans who are struggling, losing homes, living in shelters, who are under employed, who are old and living in poverty after years of work because pensions and retiree benefits have vanished. Many have gone back to creating art, crafts, knitting and crocheting and selling vintage items to support themselves. I believe we need to support them so they can support themselves. There are more people turning to quilting and the results are magnificent.

I think the movement to buy American should explode to the retailers and as the movie said, “Play It Forward”. If we buy American, it will help other Americans to be able to buy products which will help OUR economy, rather than the economies of other countries. I know this may seem isolationist, but we need our middle class back. The jobs we loss, the more we lose of the American Dream.

So Home Goods, check out American crafters from around the country and make it a company policy and see how much that marketing concept will play with the “common consumer”. The movement is growing, so be ahead of the game.

What countries were you in and where did the items come from? I was in Kenya a few years ago and saw the women of the Nanyuki Weavers. They keep the sheep, shear them, card, dye and weave the wool into rugs, pillows and more. Their work is fabulous! Since so many of the women have lost husbands, they had no means of support. They do this in order to have enough money to support themselves and their children, and pay for the children to go to school.
Their project is also supported by the Lutherin Church

Joan – your ideas and photos are awesome!! I’ve always known I was a “visual” person, but this confirms it! I would be SO happy in spaces like these!! This gives me hope! And you’re right about IKEA and the Container Store being an online source for shelving and some of these things, but that’s the “hardware” – HomeGoods and the Blog contributions give you the “software” to make a house homey and not a sterile warehouse – Thank you, this is good stuff! Great pictures! I love-and can’t believe I didn’t think of it-the idea of hanging w/hooks or magnets the items in the bathroom. I’m going to use some old baby food jars and magnets to do this. Will be great for keeping together bobby pins and other hair accessories.

I know this post was made in 2008 but I just came across it. I also decorate with cake stands and love them but what caught my eye was the Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause on the cake stand. I also have a pair just like those. I have had them since I was a little girl and my mom used them every Christmas. It has been many, many, many years since I was a ‘little’ girl which means that they are really old. Love them.

Hi Joy, So glad you liked the photos. Both you and Nancy make a good point. I loved the rooms with the chandeliers. I keep trying to think of a way to make them work at my house where I have regular height ceilings. Maybe someday I’ll take the fan out of my great room and put a beautiful chandelier in there. Sorry you are so frustrated. HomeGoods is NOT an on-line store. This is why you can’t find items to buy on-line. The Blog is providing lots of inspiration for folks who want to decorate/organize etc. their own homes. You will find some bookshelves in-store if you have a HomeGoods near you. Otherwise, I know there are LOTS of on-line stores that sell shelving. Try the Container Store or Ikea. Good luck and come visit us some time just for ideas. This blog is all about ideas!

I loved looking thru these photos. There were many practical and beautiful bedrooms to inspire us. If Nancy is referring to the first bedroom shown, I must say I agree. Why would night stands and lamps be at the foot of any bed? They’d be much more helpful and there’s room to put them at the head of the bed. Other than that change, the first room was my favorite.

Hi Susan,
Loooove yoga. I go to a class that’s a combo of yoga and pilates. More movement to get the heart rate up and keep it interesting. In order to get myself out tho, it’s become a “date” with my BFF and me. We get a quick cup of coffee afterward and I get home with a total feeling of “om”. It’s hard to fit exercise in but so important – physical AND mental health. Thanks for sharing your space.

I have old iron radiators in my home and I find it very drying to my skin. I read that you can put a contaner of water on to the radiators to put mostur back into the air. So I went shopping at Home goods and found small porsline dipping trays to add atop of the radiators. I nice touch vs tin pie plates, tea kettles….

Yes, lots of pattern mixing now and it’s so much fun because just about anything goes. I like to have one unifying element like color, but like I said, anything goes. HomeGoods does have lots of great things to mix and match, so it’s really fun to see what you can come up with.

Love hearing from you! Glad you’re a basket case like me :) I do like baskets for storing things that will be seen. They just look so great. I do like the natural baskets. They go with EVERYTHING and bring a wonderful texture and organic feel to a room that other storage pieces lack. For kids rooms though, the colored woven plastic ones might be an a more functional option.

Those colors sound lovely — very tropical. The tangerine is starting to pop up everywhere in the spring lines, but you may have more trouble locating the aqua and yellow. Sometimes buying fabric and having things made and/or painting things in the colors you want is the way to go. Good luck and send up pictures when you have it all together!

Hi Jean: You have a common issue with flutuating weight. I recommend having only your CURRENT size in your closet and putting the other sizes in bins in a spare closet or in storage bins to draw on when you need them.
But also, be really honest with the clothes you have in each size range. We only wear about 20% of the clothes that we own 80% of the time, so keep the best and let go of the rest. Good luck!!

oh yes, I want, I want, I want. SO much just doesn’t fit most of the time but my weight fluctuates so that some of the time it DOES fit. So often, I have gone ‘shopping’ in my closet and come up with an outfit put together from stuff I have kept forever, and THAT is what keeps me from throwing so much out. I LOVE to wear big turtlenecks under bedclothes since my bedroom is pretty cold at night-too bad, I threw the oversized ones I could now use out two years ago!
I want to be a minimalist but it sure is hard when I also want to be prepared with clothes to wear in many different situations.
I still have a few jackets left with shoulder pads that I just CAN’T toss; I know as soon as I do the shoulder pads will come back. To top it off, finances are to the bone.
There must be a way I can turn this moaning and groaning about WANTING to get organized into a positive actuality. I keep moving things around and around.

i love everyone’s ideas, but i have to say that i was extremely upset that this year neither homegoods, tjmaxx or marshall’s had more than a few token chanuka items. for the past five years i have bought at least five things at my local homegoods. dishes, menorahs, games, decorations,etc. but this year, nothing. i wrote to each segment of the business and rec’d no reply. sad. very bad customer service. i’m hoping someone notices this.

Hi Linda:
Thanks for your comment on the HG blog. It is very challenging to manage a lot of medical supplies and equipment in a Master bed/bathroom without it looking like a hospital room so I certainly can appreciate your struggle. A couple of ideas off the top of my head would be as follows:

- if you have room for a nightstand next to the bed, choose one that has several drawers so that you can use these to store the items he needs to have at hand. If there’s additional supplies that need to be in the room but not so accessible then consider some plastic bins which you could slide under the bed out of sight when not in use.
- your idea of a wardrobe is an excellent choice instead of a dresser. Do you have an Ikea near you? Their units are reasonably priced and so versatile you can configure them to work however you like.
- if you have actual equipment in the room that needs to remain in place, what about placing a decorative screen in front of it? Not knowing your layout I’m not sure how this would work but if tubes etc. could still be accessible it would be a way to hide it from view.
- In the bathroom consider adding any additional shelving you can above the toilet and use pretty baskets to store not so pretty items out of sight but not out of reach.

Hope those view ideas are of some help. Maybe you could also create a little reading corner for yourself if there’s space in the room. A comfy chair, a soft throw, a floor lamp and a wee table for your book or cup of tea with one of your favorite pictures or paintings on the wall? When you have such a heavy load of caregiving on a daily basis it’s good to carve out a little time/space to refresh yourself too.

I enjoyed reading your ideals and seeing them to .I am struggling trying to figure out my husbands master bed room and bathroom. I just don’t have to worry about cloths and shoes. My husband has kidney failure, diabetic and missing both legs. I have all his medical supplies to also consider. If you or any one else can give me suggestions I would really be grateful. Needles, drain bags ,medicines, cassettes , clamps , end caps , bandages, legs, cleaners, extensions, all need to used every day. I am saving up for closets now for dressers are hard for him to pull out I love to have a nice pretty bedroom again. Wake up and want to get out of bed. It feels like a medical bedroom and not a master bedroom. I know it bothers my husband a lot for I love to be organized and pretty things like most women . He is always saying sorry to me but he was born with this . I want to do this for him more than me. Thank you Linda

As long as a post was open to read – all of the photos showed when I clicked on my Pin it button. If you don’t have the button downloaded, you can still find photos on the HomeGoods Pinterest Page. The way you pulled everything together looked beautiful! I am also not a fan of the traditional red, green or colored lights. I prefer white lights as well. This year I actually did everything in purple and gold, with just a hint of red! Any ornaments on my tree that weren’t in the purple/gold theme, had sentimental value or had been handed down from my parents. I have a five year-old daughter though, and she loves the colored lights, so maybe next year I’ll let her have her own small tree in her room with colored lights so we can both be happy! Great ideas, and the perfect time to discard and move forward. I like the slideshow idea for the art projects, but I also have enjoyed creating large poster board size collages of some of the projects (one board per child). They are very colorful and cheery and look nice in frames hanging on the rec room walls, plus I get to remember their younger works of art.

Hi in the before photo your cabinet has a toilet roll on the side so you must have moved the toilet and extended and remodelled the cabinets?
Also the floor looks much better with the wood than the old tiles, i like your suggestion of wood look tiles, practical and attractive, but i am wondering how all this was accomplished with only $199 or was that just for the panelling?

Hi Grace, I’m sorry you don’t care for the ornamental glass bottle/vase. It would work beautifully in any formal living room or dining room. It’s just one example of the unique decorative glass you can find at HG.

I am a huge fan of decorative glass so I often get lost in that aisle. The colors, shapes, sizes . . . a glass lovers taste of heaven. If you don’t like the piece advertised that’s okay, there are many options and styles available at your local HG store.

I love getting gift cards….they actually say to the person, “I love you so much I want you to have what your heart desires.” Women, in particular, are very picky about every area of their life. We all like different perfumes, jewelry, clothing, shoes, on and on. I much rather someone let me get the perfect gift for myself rather than receiving a very nice, yet “not my style” gift.

EVEN WORSE- not only can you not figure out what kind of store it is by clicking on “more,” but then it gives yoiu a Google satellite map which does not name streets and makes it pretty near impossible to find the store. BIG TIME REVISION NEEDED (just compare this with the GOOD sites for Marshalls and TJMaxx)

This is a HORRIBLE web site. It seems to list Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and HomeGoods without being able to distinguish between them except one-at-a-time. Both TJMaxx and Marshalls allow you to just select that group of stores. This everything-included website makes it difficult to focus on the type of store I want.

Hello Beth,

We like our bakers rack. It is very sturdy and could easily hold a microwave or two. We purchased it probably over 12 years ago at Costco for $2-300. (can’t remember) and it has fit right in to many places and spaces. It does have a granite and wood shelves. There is no manufacturers name on it, so I would suggest looking online or in stores. HomeGoods sometimes gets some nice ones in, so check there too.

Hi Tauri,

Yes, we do have wood floors in our bathrooms and they have held up very well for us. We make sure though, that there is never any standing water on them. A little water that you wipe up is fine, but they are not for bathrooms that have kids splashing water out of the tub or showers that leak onto the floors. If you have bathrooms that see lots of water, I would recommend a wood-look vinyl plank flooring that looks like wood but will hold up well in wet areas. There are some beautiful wood-look floors out there that are water friendly. There are also ceramic tile planks that look like wood. Go online and look at all the options. Real wood may be fine for you if you are careful with the water. We love ours.

Hurrah, Kyle, you got your decorations up — and they were well worth the wait. Lovely! I don’t do red either — I use wine instead as it is a better blend with our decor and pulls out the wine in our rug. I’m gradually adding in some other jewel tones as well — think peacock — just to keep it interesting!

Hi. The Better Homes and Garden links do not work any more. I would like to find out the name of the piece above the fireplace. This is so appreciated! Great organization to take you straight through the new year.
A couple of tricks I have too, include:
- a glass pitcher. I like to fill it with seltzer and cranberry juice + some fresh cranberries for a festive appearance. This is good for anyone who doesn’t want to drink or isn’t old enough!
- I like having Peppermint Schnapps handy for hot cocoa. So fun!
- I also have an oversized, hammered copper bowl that I bought at HomeGoods. I fill it with ice and mini water bottles for larger parties. Great for larger parties.

I don’t know why people think these cards are impersonal. I have always preferred to do my own shopping unless it’s someone like my husband doing the buying for me because he knows me well enough to choose the right things. Otherwise I say gift card away! I told my kids this year to let my in-laws know (in case they ask) that gift cards will make me happy for sure. I even plan to start gifting myself. A little money on a gift card here, a little there and when I am ready/in the mood to buy something for the house, I won’t have to weigh my priorities. I’ll have no choice on how the money is to be spent because I’ve already put it on a gift card and I am guessing it will feel like found money!

I am looking for bedding that has the Indian inspired work illustrated online. I’ve gone to 2 different home goods stores in Houston, (atascocita commons and the Woodlands) and have not found what i am looking for. I have seen the pillows but not the bedding. I saw this at a model home, it was a white comforter with embroidered birds that added a very nice touch of color to the otherwise serene bedding. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

We just purchased a home that has hardwood floors on the entire first floor- the problem is they remind me of a gymnasium. They have that yellowish tone to them. We can’t swing replacing or refinishing the floors now so I need some help with paint colors. I currently have Shaker Beige in my home and love it, but our floors are gunstock with some red undertones. Do you think the shaker beige could still work??

My problem right now is finding the right floor vase/art for my foyer. The one like in your post Oh The Places You’ll Go would be perfect! Why can’t I find that? :-) I want something to go next a really cool chest I got from Marshalls this summer. I’d rather have something with a fun pattern, but that vase you have would be great and like you I’d surely move it around so I can have something different in the foyer from time to time.

My foyer is one of the few rooms I actually know how I want to design from wall to wall to wall to stairs. It’s just taking a while because I refuse to buy anything I don’t love from the moment I see it. After all, this is my permanent home, not a rental. Besides the vase in which I’ll add some wonderful foliage, I think I’ll get a few floor candlesticks to go next to my orange bench that is across from the chest. The other missing link would be a round basket to go next to the bench on the other side; preferably something of size. I’ve searched two of my local HG stores. Got one more to check out and a Marshall’s then I’ll just let a little time pass and look again.

I am very disappointed and sad that Home Goods is not carrying any Hanukah items. There are Jewish people in this area and there are non Jewish folks who come in to purchase gifts for their Jewish friends. Alas, I will tell all at my temple about all the OTHER stores carrying Hanukah merchandise and I will think twice about shopping here in the future.

my walls are a soft geen and I am going to do my cabinets in master bath a flat black… I have looked for a black and soft green bed in a bag set…… no one does black and green bed spreades… I have been on computer looking for two hours…… I could do black and silver and pick up green accents but would not look as good as a bedspread with the two colors…. guess I will go to Home goods and look around…could try dying green over black stripes or a white bedspread with green flowers…..Yiekes!! Hi Liz,

Thank you so much. We’ve enjoyed our fireplace for many years now. It was red brick before, and my husband and I faced it with “river stone” an engineered stone from Eldorado Stone. We liked it because it looked like the real thing, but it was very easy to install. The stone comes with a flat back and you use a mortar to adhere it to the brick or other surface. Then you grout around the stones. The stones are manmade and look exactly like stone. There are many color variations as well. I will try to upload a picture for you or email you a better/bigger picture.

We recently purchased a rug from Home Goods. It was Made in Turkey of Polypropylene and was 7.9×10.9 in size. The tag had this information; Dept 23, PC1011, VS LNH331B, Style 109768, Type 1, Cat 8012, PO 00948344, Page 002, Line 006. What we would like to know is whether there exists a runner or small rug in the same style. Limits of the runner are 45 inches by 109 inches. Anything smaller down to 72 inches would be acceptable, and width done to 41 inches. Really would like to get one that matches the larger rug, as they would be laying next to each other. Appreciate any comments.

Your guest room is lovely. (I too would love to know the paint color)

The only tips I can think of are:

1) Make sure the windows in the guest room have shades or curtains that effectively darken the
room in case your guest wants to sleep late.
2) Have extra pillows and blankets available.
3) Include a little night light so your guests will not be stumbling around in the dark. This will
be especially helpful for guest who have to navigate their way down a dark hallway to find the
bathroom.

Yes, the tree trimmers in our area were trimming trees and I picked up a few oak branches to use sometime during the holidays. These I spray painted with just silver spray paint, leaves and all. I liked how pretty they looked on, and as they dropped off on the table I just left them to look like leaves had fallen for fall.

A cute idea a friend of mine did was frame gutter guards (metal screening) and use single “S” hooks to hang her necklaces with. Similar to the first idea on this page.

Olga, As long as you stick with the same color family I think you can go with whatever makes you happy. The rugs in the two bottom photos are more traditional. For a homey feel, I used to use braided rugs. Most of my rug finds have happened while I was just browsing. I just knew it would fit. Carry some color samples with you to coordinate palettes and you should be good to go! Let us know what you find!

Yes, the dining room wasn’t too big, but it looks much more spacious after, than the before, because of correct size and scale of furnishings and drapery that went floor-ceiling and out to the corners in the room…a real room expanding idea. Also the mirror open and reflects light. So, lots of tricks that help a smaller room feel larger.

Cathy I purchased a Bicci chair from TJMAXX/Homegoods in Highpoint NC. It is a black fabric with silver studs. I cannot find another anywhere and to be honest I have not found the personnel helpful . It is a “check back,” Or there might be a new truck” but no one wants to see if they can run one down for me I was really hoping to have a pair. Hi Dayna,
So good to hear from you!! Yes, it’s always nice to decorate with things that having meaning to you. I often use many things given to me by family and friends because I know they were thinking of me when they picked it out. So, they are special. I’m sure you do the same.

The leaves and branches I use are a mix of faux and real. I like to mix in real branches with faux leaves to give them more realism. But, many times I use real leaves, as on the patio, and, believe it or not, I’ll use orange and yellow spray paint on old dried up brown leaves to give them some more color. Yes, I know I’m nuts!!

Don’t get me wrong. I love coral, shells, etc. But I also work in conservation, so please keep in mind that taking a shell often means taking the life of the animal. Even dead corals provide the foundation for live corals. So, please, in home decor, use reproductions or antique specimens.

Brown paper packages tied with raffia w/ a ribbon rose tucked in for color is my signature Christmas wrap! Inexpensive brown wrapping paper comes in really long rolls so I seldom need to purchase it more then once every couple of years… the ribbon roses are a simple to make home made touch and the overall look gives it a vintage look that always brings a smile and reminds people of the sound of music! :) For weddings wrap your gift in foil (or silver paper if you really can’t get over the foil bit) then top with white tule — really pretty and simply elegant.

Hi Tiffany,

Thank you. Yes, I have low textured walls, so we just added the boards right over top of the walls. This does look better with a low or no texture because it gives the impression of paneled walls. If you have quite a bit of texture, you could add a thin flat paneling panels first and top it with the 1 x4 boards. A little more work but it would look better. I’ve seen it done both ways and it does look nice all paneled.
The top part of the wall you can just keep the textured finish.
Hope that answered your question and have fun installing those paneled walls.
You’ll really like the look.

Looks fantastic. Quick question, do you have textured walls? And if so, do you just slap the trim boards up, or put down a huge piece of 1/4 inch thick wood to cover the textured walls then add the trim? We have textured builder grade walls. I have a split foyer home. The challenge for me is main level space (upper level). When you enter my home, I have a very small foyer and stairs that go straight up into the living area on the left (or straight ahead into the kitchen). Donna, Red goes well with so many colors. My daughter has used lots of purple and it looks great. Right now beiges and grays are very popular. Your sofa is your pop of color so it’s great to let it be the focal point in your room.

This past sumer I spent two weeks in Sweden and was blown away by the cool elements of Scandanavian design… the simplicity, the freshness, the style of it all. I brought home some things and now am looking for more here in the States. I’ve decided to have a Swedish Christmas this year. I’m even getting a Volvo!! Kudos to Home Goods for picking up on this awesome trend!!

I really like the new Nordic themed concept and will definitely stop in at HomeGoods to do some shopping. A friend just gave me some Norwegian heirlooms from her family that was downsizing, since all I have left from my grandparents was a Norwegian dictionary of which our first dog ate the corners off!

I love the lamp and vase! I’m so lucky to have two Home Goods stores open in my area, the one on Rt. 1 in Alexandria, Va and the one in Falls Church, Va. I also shopped at the one in Lancaster, PA in Oct. Bought a much needed griddle for a fraction of the price they wanted at the outlets! I LOVE HOME GOODS!!!

My Norwegian grandmother loved to ice skate as a child, and never lost her appreciation for all things wintry — crisp, colorful, warm, simple, and well-designed. That meant lots of fresh green garlands made of spruce & fir along the mantle and framing the front door during the holidays. We even decorated the simple wooden sled Nana had as a child with fresh fir garlands– and set St. Nicolas’ wooden shoes outside each Christmas eve — filled with grass for St. Nick’s reindeer — a tradition I continued with my children, much to their delight.

I have a deep love of all things Scandinavian to this day.

So many of the new rugs these days look more like art than floor cover. This has inspired me to mount them on the large scale wall of my two story family room giving drama, interest and warmth to a potentially cold cavernous space…not to mention adding a surprise element by using a run in an unusual place!

I love the iron bed and the way the room looks…Wish I could find one for my second home that I am decorating. I also love the living room! The chandelier is beautiful and gives the room such a classic look.

I have picked up several items from HomeGoods that has inspired the way I am going to decorate my new digs.

I took the quiz and I my decorative style is Bohemian Classic. Love that!

Great article. I’m looking for a gender neutral rug for a nursery and like the idea of using a bold rug as the focal point. I like the tips about keep the other upholstery simple as to not compete with the rug. I guess my first stop will be Home Goods to see what they have!

A must-have for me is natural sunlight when I am reading. There is nothing better than sitting in a beam of warm sun reading a good book. I also lean against a nice fluffy pillow and sink into the couch. Love it!

I think that the board with the muted blues with creams is my favorite. Just enough color to be interesting, but not too distracting. The orange would keep me occupied, and I may never get to my work!

Wow! That looks fantastic! Basically very simple, but what an impact for not a lot of money or work or time!! Great paint job on the cabinets; they look new. And I love the “paneled wall” – super “architectural” design element that pulls it all together and gives the impression that you were already starting with a “better foundation” (which is a good impression to have, since this usually translates to the impression of “better” quality/more expensive). Congratulations on design, creativity and work well done! I will definitely keep this for future reference.

I was in heaven when i had my craft room! I gave it up for my children to have their own bedroom when they came over. NEED to have another craft room!!! I love getting super creative but having to pick it up every night kinda puts a damper on it.

I, too, am a little more middle-ish. Candle grouping on a handsome dark wood tray, ceramic container for remotes and a small tray from our trip to Segovia, Spain. There must be room to prop the feet or set down a drink/small plate. I’m not much for stacking or layering because it’s just clutter and doesn’t invite one to enjoy that which is on the bottom of the stack.

I absolutely love this bedroom. Buying a fixaupper house that will have to have everything done to it, I am always looking for the perfect wall coor and I have found it in the SLATE. I will need bigger beds for the store other rooms, and things for an extra bath. Also for a private office area, and a new kitchen and dining room. I cant wait to get to the store. Wish me luck.

Thank you. The color on the one wall gave the room a little drama without making the room too dark and closed in. For your room, take your time and find something that inspires the rooms color and feel and then it’s easier to build the room around it.

Hi Donna,
According to Elaine, the secret here is to lay the rug sideways, so that the longest side of the rug runs parallel to the longest side of the bed. That will give you about 18″ clear per side for an 8 x 10 rug, under a typical king size bed. A 9 x 12 looks better as it will clear about 30″ per side. But if you have an 8 x 10 that you love, you can get away with it. Hope that helps! Please let us know if there’s anything else you’d like to ask. Happy Monday!

Sarah – accessorizing a coffee table can be a daunting task! To me, the best way to get started is by picking one special item and using that as the focal point and inspiration for the rest. For instance, if you chose a big, beautiful coffee table book with a turquoise cover, then you can work around that for everything else.

We are in the process of redecorating and are putting down hardwood in our master bedroom. I want to put an 8 x 10 down under my bed. It’s a massive 4 poster king size, should I go larger with only about 15″ of rug visible on each side? The room is 13 x 20.

I just purchased a second home. I have only been in the house one time when I viewed it while the owners still lived in it. But, photos were on the MLS listing so I recorded them in my head and went to Home Goods where I found the most beautiful rug that I knew would be beautiful in the family room. I will use it as my color palette for all my furniture and accessories.

A rug can inspire the entire process. Thanks for your input! I am with you on this decorator tip.

I am looking for a piece of furniture from the indian collection. I do not have the number only a description. It was part of the relaimed wood pieces. It was about 6 ft long 2 ft tall “entertainment piece” it had 2 cabinets with glass doors and two drawers. I have been searching everywhere and have not found it again at any home goods. Hi Carrie,

What a great looking guest room. I think it just needs a pop of accent color. Maybe a turquoise color might be fun. Add a great turq. pillow on the leopard chaise. A turq. throw over the foot of the bed. A few mixed pattern turq. pillows on the bed. Bring in all the colors in some art for the walls. Keep that bedding white and add color and pattern in pillows,throw. Don’t overdo the accents. Just add enough to flavor the room and it will feel fresh and fun. If you don’t want turquoise, try tangerine, apple green, or hot pink. Treat the leopard as a neutral and will go with anything.

Hi Cathy,

This is my first time on this site and I am enjoying it. I have a problem and wonder can you help me. I am in the process of redecorating my guest bedroom and do not know what to do with my leopard print chaise lounge, and large mirror trimmed with a leopard print. My walls are taupe, curtains white, and bedding white. It looks dull to me. What can I do to make the room look inviting? My floors are hardwood. Shall I have the chaise lounge re-covered? If so, in what color? What color coverlet would you use? Please help.

I can’t decide what I like the most. The first thing I fell in love with in your decor was the candle tree (not sure how to describe it) in your front doorway. I also loved the fall themed candle sconce with the leaves in the second to last picture. Your home looks so cozy and warm.

I am so glad you did this post. I just bought a new coffee table that is made of glass and metal and I was having a terrible time coming up with ideas of how to design it. I am definitely a minimalist, but I still want the look to be complete. I love the idea of stacking books or using a candle in a hurricane.

I love so many of these pieces. I am doing my bedroom in kind of a beach cottage type feel and one of the chests in the blue distressed paint would look amazing in my room. My house hugs me because it is decorated in dark wood and warm colors that create a cozy feeling.

Hi Pat,

“Slips” are great and they cover a multitude of sins LOL. Look online for slipcovers. Just google “White furniture slipcovers”. You also can have them custom made to fit perfectly or make them yourself if you can sew. As for the table, Google again, “round white coffee tables” and see what comes up. Check out HomeGoods as well. Or paint a cast-off table from a garage sale or thrift store.
