Remix and Match
Do you not have enough matching dishes for a large group? Do you need to make old dishes look new again? Mix different colored plates with patterned ones, white with colored, or round with square. You could also try alternating place settings. All of these add a more fun and vibrant look.
HomeGoods 101:
How do I set a traditional table?
Setting it straight.

Linens: Dress your table to match the mood of your party. White, maroon, or black for more formal occasions. Bright colors or patterns for something a little more fun.

Chargers: These oversized plates are for decoration only. They come in a variety of materials and patterns and they are great for creating a visual splash under your main, dinner plate.

Plates: The number of plates depends on the type of dinner. A formal setting requires three: bread, salad, and dinner. For a casual setting, only a dinner plate is necessary. For some added flavor, alternate plates by seat.

Flatware: Flatware is placed in order of use from the outside in. For example, a salad fork would be placed furthest from the plate with a dinner fork placed between the salad fork and the plate. Forks are placed to the left of the plate, knives (with the blade side toward the plate) and spoons on the right. Bread spreaders go on the bread plate. And dessert forks and coffee spoons are placed horizontally above the setting in opposite directions.

Glassware: Glasses are placed above the plate to the right. A water glass goes above the knife. All others are set to its right. Coffee cups and saucers, if set, are put centrally above the plate.

Centerpiece: These can be used to add a focal point to the table or at multiple positions for guests to enjoy. Be creative with planters, candles at different heights, statuary, and colored art glass. But, be careful not to obstruct views between guests.
