5 Tips to Create a Cozy Guest Bedroom - guest bedroom decorating ideas

Two years ago, I repainted a guest bedroom in my house. I then added basic decor items: a rug, bed linens, lighting, curtains, and so on. The room was usable, but never felt completely finished because I never took the time to add those finishing touches like wall art, a cozy chair and decorative accessories.

As I was spring cleaning my home this year, I was determined to remedy the situation. Naturally, I hit up my favorite HomeGoods to find the pieces I needed. Today, I want to show you my completed space with 5 tips on how to do it.

1. Add a comfortable chair
When I was shopping, this armchair was the first piece I spotted. It was love at first sight. The soft blue velvet and wood legs are just right for the room.

Adding a cozy chair to a guest room is a must. You don’t want the bed to be the only place for your guests to sit. A chair is also a handy spot for guests to throw their clothes, a bag, etc.

My cats have been breaking it in for future guests.

2. Pillows
If you’ve ever been to HomeGoods, you know it is a pillow mecca. In my opinion, you can never have enough pillows. (Though my overflowing storage spaces would beg to differ.)

Adding pillows to a bed is a wonderful way to invite your guests to get comfortable. If you don’t want to load up the bed, stow a few pillows nearby in a basket for an extra decorative touch. Also, if you’re going to have an abundance of pillows, think about where your guests will place them when using the bed. A footstool or bench at the end of the bed is the ideal solution.

3. Hang a mirror
Like you, your guests will want to look in a mirror before heading out the door. Consider adding a full-length mirror as well as a more decorative one.

I love this large chunky framed mirror from HomeGoods — it works so well in my space — and definitely makes a statement. Mirrors are also great for bouncing light around a room which can make it feel brighter and more spacious.

4. Incorporate texture
When decorating any room, be sure to bring in texture. We often think of adding color to a room, but texture can be just as important because it gives character and depth to a room. You can do this in a few ways.

Here, I used rattan trays to create instant wall art. I actually picked these up in the outdoor entertaining section of HomeGoods. Vases, chunky blankets and throw pillows also can provide texture.

5. A touch of nature
Finally, a botanical touch is a must for any space. If you ever feel like a room in your home is missing something, try adding a plant or two. The color, texture and natural shape of a plant or flower can break up harsh lines throughout the space.

Plus, fresh flowers will make your guests feel welcome. I’m always picking up white vases when I’m out shopping since they work in all of my rooms. This allows me to mix things up, depending on the type of plant or flower I’m using.
